ABSTRACT

New sport technology has become increasingly important for recording, analysing, and optimizing athletic performances. Despite these recent technological advancements, sport psychology consultants are yet to fully tap into these available opportunities. This chapter provides an overview of recent technological advancements in sport psychology and highlights their key characteristics, as well as useful applications. It describes techniques that could enrich the physical environment of athletes, such as virtual, augmented, and mixed realities. The chapter provides explanations of attentional, auditory, and brain-related technologies, such as eye-tracking, sonification, and EEG, that can help improve the cognitive processes of athletes and serve as diagnostic and training tools. It also provides a discussion of the ethical and practical implications of these new technological approaches for sport psychology. Aesthetics, “joy of use”, and positive sensations athletes and researchers get when using products are important design considerations.
