ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the phenomenon of group flow, which emanates from Csikszentmihalyi’s concept of individual flow. The players’ behaviours intertwine, resulting in perfectly coordinated behaviour between team members. The construct of group flow emanates from Csikszentmihalyi’s concept of flow. In its original form, the concept of flow describes the experience of single individuals while they are absorbed in a task due to a flowing accomplishment of this task; hence, the name of flow or individual flow. Empirical research has rarely been conducted on group flow in the domain of sport and exercise. Treatments or interventions to enhance group flow have predominantly been designed for contexts outside sport and exercise. One general conclusion of these theoretical approaches is that, in attempts to understand group processes or interpersonal processes of group flow, group flow concepts have largely neglected existing theories of social science.
