ABSTRACT

Teamwork is the fuel that allows ordinary sports teams to attain extraordinary results. A quickly growing research body has evidenced that effective athlete leaders can be a critical predictor of team success. To overcome these barriers and appoint the best leaders in the team, it is essential to know what it is that makes leaders turn into great leaders. Evidence has indicated that athletes’ perceptions of their psychological connection with their coach has important motivational ramifications. Slater and Barker were the to apply the three core phases of the 5R programme within an international disability sports team. A final avenue for future researchers would be to provide more insight into the cross-cultural validity of the existing identity leadership programmes. Embracing a social identity leadership approach is advocated to lead to enhanced team effectiveness in both organizations and sports teams.
