ABSTRACT

Antonio Gramsci, a Marxist philosopher, broadened Marx’s concept of ideology by describing how social power is exercised through consent and ideology, rather than through violence and force. Sport, exercise, and performance psychology (SEPP) professionals are invited to continuously reflect on how power is relevant to all aspects of their profession, as well as their personal lives. Research on privilege has been scant in SEPP. SEPP professionals could continue to challenge the power dynamics between the researcher and researched and ensure that, as researchers, we are benefiting, and not exploiting, the researched. The few dominant ideologies examined in SEPP research have been about race or gender, rather than class and economics. To increase her physical activity and exercise adherence, SEPP professionals would need to help her examine how she is constructing the identity of a good mother.
