ABSTRACT

A brief overview of the approaches taken when designing a qualitative study are offered before exploring the possibilities of testing qualitative research, and what this might offer the field of sport and exercise psychology. The word testing is commonly associated with quantitative research rather than qualitative inquiry. This chapter begins by considering what is meant by the use of testing when using qualitative methods. In sport and exercise psychology research, member checking is extensively drawn upon as a measure of quality control and as an indicator of rigour when it comes to testing and validating qualitative inquiry. Different ways qualitative methods might be used to test qualitative research are then highlighted and critically discussed. To close, some recommendations for testing qualitative research in sport and exercise psychology are proposed. Qualitative researchers can situate their research within a variety of traditions and draw upon a myriad of empirical methods of data collection.
