ABSTRACT

This chapter assesses the presence of family education for global issues in Hungarian society. It discusses the attitudes of the young people regarding themselves and their surroundings, focusing on the future, peace, and the environment. The political leadership of the country placed the ideological struggle of the two world systems at the center of this issue, so that global concerns could easily be settled by invoking the fight between "good" and "evil." That is, a larger percentage of adolescents from families that discuss politics see the possibility of a war and the improbability of stopping the pollution of environment. Transformation requires major sacrifices from families and individuals. Increased unemployment, impoverishment, social inequalities, and value crises suppress global issues. The insecurity of future and orientation in the changing world represent larger problems for young people from a lower-status family background than for others.
