ABSTRACT

The Sahel region is a part of Africa in which the environment is extremely exhausted-perhaps more damaged than in any other region in the world. Some environmental education initiatives based on that perspective do exist, and they incorporate a major emphasis on families and communities as educators. This can be illustrated with educational experiences implemented in Burkina Faso, Senegal, Mali, and other places. Environmental Development Action in the Third World and the "association des groupements Naam" work to facilitate environmental restoration and sustainable development in the Third World. Traditionally, the parents taught the child in the early stages of development and later, at various stages of growth, the brothers and sisters as well as elders became the educators. Many rural families face accelerating environmental degradation, so that they need to utilize natural resources to survive.
