ABSTRACT

This chapter investigates a quite typical example of present trends within the field of heritage management. It concerns a nationally well-known historical building outside Göteborg, and its development into an attractive heritage site. In 1778 John Hall Sr., a well-to-do merchant of English extraction bought the farm Gunnebo not too far from his hometown Göteborg. The Gunnebo estate is located in Mölndal, a municipality adjacent to Göteborg, which in 1949 took over the responsibility for Gunnebo from the deceased Baroness Sparre. The goal – expressed in a letter of intent – was to preserve for the future the extraordinary high cultural values manifested in the estate of Gunnebo. The purpose of the new servants' building was to offer better service to the public by expanding the café, adding a restaurant, and make it possible to offer a wider selection of food and drinks based on what was produced in the kitchen garden and by the farm.
