ABSTRACT

This chapter explores why Global Action in the Interest of Animals (GAIA) opposes in principle the patenting of, the breeding of, and the carrying out of experiments on transgenic animals. Transgenic animals are created to act as bio-reactors, to produce pharmaceuticals and other proteins in their milk or blood. Sentient animals are genetically engineered to develop cancer or other painful chronic diseases. The modern scientific ethological and ethical insights into nature and the moral importance of animals do not easily find their way into society. GAIA is opposed in principle to what is happening now, but a society where people are only humans and we are not Gods, of course, it is not an ideal society. One should be open to discussion and treat very difficult and complex problems with an open mind, but surely with an honest mind.
