ABSTRACT

This chapter argues that Philip Dupont remained active within the Huguenot networks of his youth, as a Genevan-trained pastor, while developing contacts among the Presbyterian, Huguenot conformist and Anglican communities in London and Suffolk. There were networks among former ministers who now held livings in the Church of England. These networks also maintained contact with the French conformist congregations and sought to promote the welfare of newly-arrived ministers, going so far as to welcome them into their Anglican households. Evidently, for Dupont, being an Anglican priest was not an exclusive identity but was a means of supporting his prior co-religionists through his own established position. Regardless of his ancestry, Dupont survived the Revocation and made a success of his life in Suffolk. He appears fully assimilated and solidly established. His chameleon qualities made him the perfect incumbent for the parish of Assington. However, he already had links with London, in both nonconformist and conformist circles.
