ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the evolving theatre context and the planning for inter-service integration of firepower and conclude by assessing the impact of that integration in the Third Battle of Gaza. The Third Battle of Gaza in October–November 1917 has been rightly regarded as a major turning point in the campaign in Palestine and a major victory for the Egyptian Expeditionary Force. While many of the approaches in the use of firepower at Third Gaza reflected the then current best practice of the British Army in France, what makes the firepower issue unique is the degree to which its use was planned and delivered in an integrated fashion in the air, land, and maritime domains. The Third Battle of Gaza would indicate how much further Allenby would be willing to develop the application of firepower by integrating its air, land, and maritime elements.
