ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the motivations women in policing has for entering such a career and whether such motivations could contribute to the development of more service orientated policing. The police development project in Pakistan is attempting to change the culture of policing there from one of force to one which is more service orientated. Police work and organisational structures tend to reflect transactional power relationships, both within the organisation and towards society in general. A content analysis of the data generated primarily through semi-structured interviews, indicates that there are three main motivations for joining the police, those to do with personal security, with the development of a personal identity, and with helping others. Motivational factors for those women who had joined the police, for 'the uniform and weapons', are related to anxiety reduction both at the physical and psychological levels.
