ABSTRACT

This chapter considers a starting point for studying and researching the management of the performance appraisal process for faculty members of all universities in the West Bank area of Palestine. It aims at testing the effectiveness and the art of managing the performance appraisal process for full-time faculty members at Birzeit University. The chapter also aims at perceiving the degree to which the appraisal process contributes to the development of faculty members and its influence on their performance in order to know if faculty members are satisfied while performing their jobs. The results of the survey have identified that the respondents view the performance appraisal process as being routine, traditional, subjective and a cold mechanism, especially because most faculty members do not get feedback about their appraisal results. The results of the study show that there are several areas in the appraisal process that should be improved, such as top management commitment to the process and better open feedback.
