ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the process, outcomes, and future directions for Sustainable Calgary's indicators project. It seeks to the question of what insights these local experiences have to offer to the discussion of international trade agreement reform. The movement toward local sustainability indicators is consistent with a growing realisation that cities, regions, nations, and the global community all rely upon a solid foundation of sustainable local communities. The sustainability indicators project is an exciting opportunity to discover what constitutes a sustainable quality of life. The relationship between lifestyle and quality of life is key to sustainability. Sustainable Calgary's analysis reveals that there are signs of wear in the fabric of Calgary's community life. Tentative steps are being taken to address resource consumption, and the city's citizens enjoy a relatively healthy natural environment. Calgary's education and health systems are still among the best in the world but are showing signs of stress.
