ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the Asian turbulence from national/regional security angles, with a focus on the phenomena after the first wave of financial turmoil in Southeast Asia. It discusses the concept of economic security in a non-military context and explicates Association of Southeast Asian Nations' (ASEAN's) conceptions of economic security to define the scope of this study. The chapter analyses the economic-security causalities of the case and explores the economic dynamism of national security concerns. It highlights concerns regarding future potential developments and suggests stronger ties with extra-ASEAN states to assure ASEAN's economic security. Since the mid-1980s, the East Asian regional economic networks have been driven by market forces at the corporate level. ASEAN states have been able to reach their consensus of prioritising the economic values on the top of national security agenda. The Asian turbulence is not only testing individual state's capacities but also challenging the collective efforts of ASEAN states to control the contagious effects across borders.
