ABSTRACT
In 1973 there appeared I.A. Richards: Essays in his honor. One of the trustiest tributes came from William Empson, honouring his old teacher. Empson was nearing seventy, Richards was eighty, but then as Empson once remarked, one trouble with getting old is that you all become the same age.
