ABSTRACT

How is television piracy evolving in an age of streaming and smart TVs? What new technologies, markets, and practices are emerging, and what do they mean for debates about global television? This chapter develops a typology of television piracy in the post-BitTorrent environment. It explains recent changes in the landscape, including the rise of Kodi and IPTV (internet protocol television) piracy, and discusses related enforcement strategies by television rights-holders. It situates these changes with reference to the scholarly research on television distribution, and considers their conceptual significance for the field. Key differences between streaming and peer-to-peer piracy are identified and theorized.
