ABSTRACT

In social realist comedy such as Going Up (GU), the audience witnesses the breaking of established social codes. The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) has been given the task of contributing to the development of a national identity and culture. In a 'classless' society technological revolutions can implement profound change, and the issue of male and female sexuality arose in the discussion of the pornographic video tapes. Among Zulu women of different political and socio-economic position, there were those who believed it was their right to view pornographic tapes as a free expression of their sexuality. A woman from the English group and one from the Afrikaans proposed a liberal feminist position, placing the onus of censorship on the individual to view and respond to material as the woman sees fit. The educated Afrikaans group rejected the presence of pornography in the society as did part of the Zulu group and the English group.
