ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on wind erosion, the insidious agent of desertification in Sub-Saharan African Sahel, with emphasis on control strategies and surrounding policy issues. Many techniques and strategies have been shown to have the potential to protect land resources from erosive effects of wind. The importance of public participation in the design and implementation of control measures has been highlighted, and by the same token, the formulation of land regeneration policies and intervention strategies should involve local beneficiaries to ensure policy and programme appropriateness and relevance. In the absence of effective control measures and alternative livelihoods, farmers continue to work such land, until it is completely mined, and has to be abandoned. The importance of public participation in the design and implementation of control measures has been highlighted, and by the same token, the formulation of land regeneration policies and intervention strategies should involve local beneficiaries to ensure policy and programme appropriateness and relevance.
