ABSTRACT

In the social dimension of certain societies, viz., the Nordic region, the demand for equal pay for equal or comparable work is counted as a human right. Every individual has the right to a reasonable wage that will support a life worthy of a human being. The individual also has a right to a decent standard of living. The United Nations Declaration of Human Rights as well as the different European charters recognise the demand for an equitable wage as an essentially defensible and desirable principle. The UN's Convention regarding Economic, Social and Cultural Rights states that every individual is entitled to an opportunity to earn a living through her own labour and that the wage should guarantee the employee a decent standard for herself and her family. The wage should be reasonable and equitable; it is also of great importance that women's working conditions are no worse than the working conditions for men. 1
