ABSTRACT

There were few regions that had not been affected by the Balkan powder barrel. Those regions who suffered most and who were most threatened had been ethnically mixed regions. Vojvodina is an agricultural and relatively prosperous region of multinational character. The Serbs in Vojvodina, farmers or traders, were very attached to their Serbian-orthodox religion and although they lived in a multinational context, “they had understood the necessity of respectfully living together with other ethnic groups”. The period of federal and socialist Yugoslavia had a strong impact on the relations between Voj vodina’s nationalities. The communists in Vojvodina controlled the process of the reestablishment of confidence between the different national communities. The community of Temerin is situated south-east of Backa, not far from Novi Sad. The community includes the town of Temerin and the localities Staro Djurdjevo, Backi Jarak and Sirig. The community of Subotica covers 809 square kilometers and totals 154,000 inhabitants spread over 19 localities.
