ABSTRACT
The purpose of this chapter is to explore the construction of the ethnic identity of several different generations of Leningrad Jews, as a microcosm of the changes that have taken place in Russian society in terms of the private/public division of social life. Our reflections on this subject are based on biographical narratives we collected during a research project carried out in 1993-6 by the Centre for Independent Social Research.1
