ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of 'The Scottish Perspective', with an emphasis on how this context has influenced the development of the first nationwide network of holistic NHS services for ex-forces personnel and their families in Scotland. The chapter focuses on recent specialist developments within NHS Scotland for veterans and their families that are focused on providing a one-stop shop for all welfare, physical and mental health needs. It also gives an overview of need and the initial development of a care plan across welfare (housing, finance, employment, social relations and activities), physical and mental health. Veterans F1rst Point (V1P) (Lothian) is a service currently funded by the Mental Health and Protection of Rights Division of the Scottish Government and NHS Lothian. Staff are employed by the NHS and follow NHS policies and procedures. V1P was created in 2009 in response to the self-identified needs of veterans.
