ABSTRACT

This chapter describes research which examined young people's experience of growing up in family poverty. It provides information about a neglected group of young people - those living with their families and growing up in poverty. The interviews examined the impact of poverty on key areas of young people's lives, including physical health, education and future prospects, experience of crime, family relationships, and social lives. The interviews were conducted in three different parts of the country - the south coast, the west of England, and Scotland. The chapter highlights differences by key variables of gender, ethnicity and age. It explores the implications of the study for research, including a discussion of methodological issues and directions for future research that arise from it. The chapter also provides a number of policy recommendations, addressing the ways in which specific policy changes could help to improve the quality of life, and the prospects, of young people who are growing up in family poverty.
