ABSTRACT

Although bioethics experts can be found everywhere, and are present as the key experts to advise research ethics committees, one must take time to reflect on the criteria and the role models guiding these experts. This chapter considers the role models that are part of the active world of bioethics, as it have constituted it, and thereafter to the field of research ethics as the applied terrain upon which bioethics has already left indelible marks and patterns. The role of clinical ethicists should be, through training and facilitating a process of dialogue between health professionals and patients, to raise the level of consciousness in our health-related decision-making to the point where conscience is heightened among all parties. The chapter considers the role and function of clinical ethics in the specific domain of research, where it can observe the testing out and crystallization of a mature formation of a generalized movement of ethics training and concept building.
