ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of key concepts discusses in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book addresses the various forms of insecurity faced by migrant women in Europe. It looks at the ways in which immigrant women have themselves tried to fight against these insecurities through their own political mobilisation. The book examines the impact of globalization and of contemporary immigration and asylum policies on these women's lives, but attempts to avoid the portrayal of migrant women as mere 'victims' of such processes, examining their role as active agents in the migratory process. It examines the challenges posed to women asylum seekers in the UK by the new legislation introduced by the government by Emma Clarence. The book examines the lives of African women in the UK who are living with Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)/AIDS, highlighting the particular problems these women face because of their gender, their situation as migrants and their illness by Jane Anderson.
