ABSTRACT

This chapter presents some results of the research conducted by Colectivo Ioe on the integration of migrant women from the 'third world' in Spain into society and employment. It explores the ways that immigrants are integrated into employment in Spain and its complex social and human reality. Paid work by immigrant women refers in the majority of cases to another area of production, the home or domestic economy, to which they contribute with their dedication and affection, by contributing their salary and/or in the form of money sent to relatives that are still in their country of origin. Out of the five segments selected, domestic service particularly stands out, providing employment for just over half of the non-Community women who contribute to social security, and for the majority of them is the 'gateway' to the Spanish labour market. Female immigrant workers contribute a considerable amount to the public treasury through their social security contributions and direct taxes and indirect taxes.
