ABSTRACT

This chapter presents two case studies. The first case is based on an attitude survey among Swedish and immigrant members of tenants' associations in the district of Brickebacken in the city of Orebro. It presents an account of the attitude of the Swedish and ethnic minorities towards participation and representation. The second case describes the role of immigrant groups in urban regeneration in the district of Rinkeby in Stockholm. It discusses how dissatisfaction with property-led urban renewal stimulated immigrant groups takes a more active part in the following program for urban regeneration. Housing segregation in Sweden, as in Britain, has been increasingly "race selective". The chapter is based on interviews with nine persons in Brickebacken: three immigrants who are only members of the neighborhood tenants' association, three immigrants who have moreover commissions of trust in neighborhood associations' executive committee and three Swedes in similar positions.
