ABSTRACT

Biffa Waste Services Ltd (Biffa), founded in 1919, is one of Britain’s largest integrated waste management companies. They provide waste management services to industry, commerce and the public in the United Kingdom and Belgium. Biffa’s vehicles collect waste from commercial, industrial and municipal premises and offload it at transfer stations, landfill sites, treatment facilities, recycling plants or other disposal sites. The Biffa landfill site at Redhill in Surrey is situated within former quarry workings. The waste management industry is very heavily regulated and tightly licensed. Waste operators need permission to open new operational sites from local authority planning departments which impose stringent land use, environmental and aftercare conditions. The Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS) registration has given Biffa a certain profile and has generated a lot of interest and visits. Biffa has also found it difficult that EMAS only applied to a single site as opposed to the whole company.
