ABSTRACT

ICR Ioannou is a Greek example of a modem company that is particularly interested in new management systems. The company developed a systematic computer software package for monitoring its production line, introduced Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS) for auditing its environmental impacts, embraced quality system standards and took some initiatives in health and safety. EMAS implementation has also helped the company to develop a more flexible organisational structure and a clearer division of responsibilities. EMAS was perceived as both a good marketing tool and a good public relations tool. The decision to implement EMAS was taken at the top by the owner, but the environmental manager and the external consultant played a crucial role in the decision-making process. Sato is highly sensitive to environmental issues and one of its factories was the first EMAS site registered in Greece. One of the main reasons for EMAS implementation was to bring about a reduction in the level of pollutants.
