ABSTRACT

United States exports of agricultural products exceeded $51 billion in 1999, of which more than 50 per cent were high-valued food products (fruits, vegetables, and processed food). About 38 per cent of U.S. agriculture and food exports went to Asia in 1999. The predominant markets for U.S. exports of high valued food products (HVFP) in Asia have been Japan, China, Taiwan, Korea, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, and India. In 1999, U.S. exports of agricultural, fish and forestry products to China reached to $3.4 billion, and HVFP constituted more than 50 per cent of these exports. Bulk commodities in U.S. agricultural exports to China have been declining, and HVFP have been steadily increasing since 1989.
