ABSTRACT

Effective management of diversity and talent have been often considered as imperative for competitiveness and longevity of organisations. Yet, talent and diversity are frequently studied in separate silos. In order to demonstrate the utility of considering talent and diversity together, rather than as mutually exclusive constructs, we examine management of talent and diversity in a global context. While doing this, we first investigate the concept of talent in its historical context, identifying a number of reasons for the prominence it has gained in management circles in recent decades. Subsequently, we turn to the global context of talent management, in the second section of the chapter, reviewing the theory and practice of talent management and scrutinising its scope and definitions. We then explore management of talent and diversity in order to show how a focus on diversity can help improve our understanding and management of talent.
