ABSTRACT

One way in which we experience networked, urban mobilities is through the sensory uncanny—strange juxtapositions that borrow from one place and are found in another, leaving the one who is experiencing surprised, confused, or having to re-negotiate what they once knew before. This chapter underlines how one online platform—Airbnb—can be an example of how an online aesthetic regime sets an agenda for an uncanny tourist experience, and more broadly, how ‘the digital’ has become central to the mobilities discourse. This approach of experiencing networked urban mobilities will discuss the way in which home-stays, hospitality networks, and short-term rental websites can foster such experiences.
