ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of class cultures. It defines class cultures and reviews how the classes tend to vary in their tastes, worldviews, dispositions, and language. It also reviews the research on the roots of class cultures, pointing especially to how the opportunities and constraints that parents face lead to classed socialization practices. The chapter also outlines why class cultures are important in the reproduction of inequality, with an emphasis on the role classism plays. It concludes by pointing to avenues of future research.
