      ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the changes in the Swedish city of Orebro during the last fifty years. It focuses on changes in urban planning, especially in housing. The changes in population in Orebro are connected to changes in the local economy. A distinction can be made between the everyday life and its conditions. The conditions are the social and societal preconditions for the everyday life. One main issue in planning and politics in Orebro from the 1940s and to the 1970s was the housing problem. One reason to choose a plan for the city of Orebro is that its urban planning and housing design from the 1940s and onwards has earned Orebro the epithet of model city. Societal change brings changes in the central themes of planning. The plan contains an idea of the organization of people's everyday life, and how this organization can be improved by planning.
