ABSTRACT
This chapter explores how integrating information can contribute to urban resilience through the production of more meaningful and well-informed policy and action. While there are a number of resilience concepts available in the literature, it proposes that resilience must go beyond dealing with individual threats and that a dynamic rather than static perspective is required. The concept of resilience used in the chapter reviews viewing urban settlements as complex, dynamic systems subject to a continuum of disturbances within a context of uncertainty. It discusses some of the challenges that lead city governments to develop resilience policies and initiatives, and seeks support from other levels of government as well as the private sector and civil society. The chapter also explores the role of information and the relevance of its integration across organisational boundaries and software domains to achieve resilient policies. It provides two examples of how information integration can help achieve resilience and resilient policies.
