ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a brief overview of advanced technologies in construction safety, including Building Information Modelling (BIM) and information and communication technologies, as well as two examples of their use for safer scaffolding and early warning of construction safety. It reviews the use of digital technologies, including BIM, radio frequency identification, Geographic Information System and other technologies, in enhancing construction safety performance. Notable benefits of using BIM in construction safety through applications such as hazard identification and visualisation include: increased cognitive ability of spatial information; and better reliance on past experience and memory. Practitioners can use technologies in construction safety to improve the accuracy of safety warning, improving safety management productivity and reducing the cost of safety management activities. Many advanced technologies have been implemented in the construction industry in years to improve safety performance.
