ABSTRACT

Energy dynamics at the international, regional, and national levels affect Morocco in various ways. This chapter focuses on the implications of international and national developments for the country's energy mix and domestic consumption, as well as for politics and the economy. Since the 1990s, Morocco's energy policy aims both to improve energy security and to ensure energy access to the growing population. The most national energy strategy, developed in 2009, reflects national and global changes in energy politics, and places a stronger emphasis on renewable energy, energy efficiency, and sustainability. As a country almost entirely dependent on energy imports and in the midst of continuous economic growth, the changing dynamics of regional and global energy greatly influence Morocco's energy sector. Fluctuations in global oil prices have shown Morocco's leadership that investments in improving energy security are essential. The chapter discusses the political economy of subsidy reform in Morocco.
