ABSTRACT

This chapter explores how the Internet and the form of social communication and virtual community known as the weblog or blog can serve the goals of overcoming the invisibility of persons with disabilities, changing existing paradigms surrounding the concept of disability, and advocating for equal rights in contemporary Mexico. The rapid development of the Internet and the World Wide Web since the late 1980s has granted unique opportunities and new challenges to persons with disabilities and to all who aspire to live in a truly inclusive world. The medium of the blog has proved to be a valuable tool for persons with disabilities and disability activists. It is interactive and it allows a dialogue between bloggers and readers across both geographical distance and any number of social boundaries. Easily embedded links create an ever-expanding network of resources that are accessible from one base location, and over time, a blog can forge a virtual community based on affinities, and common values.
