ABSTRACT

There are many places where the relationship lives on, albeit in new forms, in both ordinary daily events and in larger life purposes. Barbara Myerhoff said, “re-membering” distinguishes between the active re-investing in a life and passive, wistful remembering. The idea of continuing bonds stimulates a new form of practice that potentially produces a significant resource for the bereaved person who is facing the ongoing challenges of living or provides a source of comfort in the face of loss. There are many possibilities for where the conversation might recognize and strengthen a strong posthumous bond. Counseling conversations farm current and historical bonds for their usefulness. Re-membering conversations invite the bereaved person to affirm what is important to them and highlight where the bond is sustaining and supportive. Re-membering may be seen as a salve for the pain that is magnified by the insistence on negating a life after death.
