ABSTRACT
Although attempts to study battlefields and sites of conflict date from the early days of archaeology, conflict archaeology is a relatively new sub-discipline of the subject. While there was some significant work before the turn of the new millennium, conflict archaeology really took off from 2000. This chapter traces the development of the sub-discipline; outlines the methodologies, particularly where they differ from standard archaeological practice; and considers cultural heritage management issues raised by sites of conflict.
