ABSTRACT

This chapter surveys the links between historical archaeology and Marxism over the last two decades, and while there have been few explicit Marxist statements, historical archaeologists have been engaging with Marxist thinking. We explore this engagement in two distinct arenas: human/environmental dynamics and labor. We argue that Marxism provides a powerful tool to help us understand the web of life of our contemporary capitalist world as well as a crucial vantage point to envision a different future. Marx’s ghost continues to haunt historical archaeology, and this haunting will only increase as global capitalism, instability, and inequality continue to grow.
