ABSTRACT

In this chapter we offer a panoramic view of the contributions of South American historical archaeology to gender studies, organizing them in axes of epistemological affinities with other types of researches of the sub-discipline. We discuss pioneering approaches and themes that remain relevant over time, as well as the more recent trends that have broadened the focus of the investigations to discuss how the intersectionality between gender, race, class, sex, and sexuality have operated in modernity. We emphasize, as the most important aspect of the commented studies, the challenges involved in discussing gender from a disciplinary structure that erases, distorts, and disqualifies its relevance.
