ABSTRACT

This chapter suggests that concept of labour orientation, which was coined during the 1970s and fell into oblivion for more than a decade. The concept expresses that contrary to the postulate of common national or company interests, there is still a difference between the interests of capital and labour. The chapter presents the future of democratic labour relations in Europe, mainly the following questions: European science and research policy only to increase competitivity? Which perspectives of European scientific policy for the world of labour? Which strategies for labour-oriented science and research? A report by the World Bank questioned the success of economic policy but not of science and technology policy. As the production process depends more and more on science and technology, the democratic control of science and technology is the other central item. Two of Europe’s greatest contributions for the development of humanity are the foundations of democracy and of modern science.
