ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the role of public relations in foresight trends by drawing upon future studies to analyse and critique public relations approaches to a range of future trend forecasts. It examines how a range of trends are discursively promoted and highlights mimesis, imitating already recognised and accepted approaches to popularisation, as a key promotional strategy. The chapter also discusses a range of tactics, from forecasts and survey news to algorithms, in order to understand the public relations practices at play and analyse the value of these practices.
