ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with the seemingly ephemeral nature of fashion to ask: what conditions, movements and connections form these modes of meaning production and sense making? It interrogates the ways in which fashion choices by prominent women, including Michelle Obama, Melania Trump, Jacinda Ardern and Meghan Markle, can be powerful statements that advance particular messages. It concludes that studying fashion enables insights into the political importance of popular culture in influencing social change.
