ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the important role public relations might play in reconciliation, and therefore offers an alternative conceptualisation of public relations where it plays a prominent and positive role in social justice and social change. Drawing on contemporary race politics in Australia, it highlights the need to locate public relations within social and cultural contexts and for an historical understanding of Indigenous people and public relations practices. The chapter advocates a critical pedagogy to enable future practitioners to reflect on race and to consider the ways public relations might challenge existing knowledge and power structures in order to bring about positive social change and social justice.
