ABSTRACT

This chapter draws on recent scholarship on activism and public relations to consider the significance of protest PR and dissent PR in relation to the protests in Barcelona following the Catalan independence referendum in October 2017. Rallies, strikes, demonstrations, media statements, posters, graffiti, social media posts, interviews and speeches, as forms of protest PR and dissent PR, sought to influence ideas and public discourse around Catalan independence, built on a strategic narrative of social justice, Catalan national identity and Spanish oppression. The framing of Catalan national identity as a social justice issue was amplified through their communication efforts.
