ABSTRACT

Because algorithms are brokers of information in a digital economy, they present an important site for study from a rhetorical perspective. This chapter redefines the concept of rhetorical agency to account for the ongoing and dynamic collaborations between humans and algorithms within the interactive networks of digital culture. By examining glitches in algorithmic activity as articulations of rhetorical agency, this chapter renders visible the ethical implications of algorithmic activities and raises important questions of accountability and responsibility in an age of automation.
