ABSTRACT

This chapter analyzes the all-around men finalists at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games with respect to their rotational system and categorizes according to the classification system. The phenomenon of rotational preference has not been researched with the same tenacity as the handedness, the footedness, the eyedness and the earedness. In past years, there have been some recordings about the rotational preference in gymnastics. While observing babies and very young children, it is possible to speculate that the setting of the rotational preference occurs very early, perhaps already in the womb as F. H. Previc also suggested. Certainly, there are considerations that may lead to the decision that a gymnast has to give up the preferred rotation scheme partly depending on the situation. The terminology of pure and restricted rotation schemes should be preceded by the direction of turning in upright stance.
